- 'Break 147' and 'Super Pool'
-
- Additional notes and recommendations.
-
- The ball calculation accuracy in both of these simulations is to a scale
- movement of plus or minus .635 of a millimetre. In addition to this the
- rotational accuracy is to 1.75 minutes of arc. Or to put it another way, in
- 'Break 147' you can hit a ball in any of 12,288 directions from any one of
- 4,147,200 possible locations on the table.
-
- The above statistics become very important when playing either 'Break 147'
- or 'Super Pool'. Because the graphics are displayed in Mode 13 the maximum
- visual resolution is only 320 by 256 pixels giving the total number of
- displayed dots as 81,920. This is made worse by the fact that for most
- normal shots the visible section of the table may only occupy some 40% of
- the screen.
-
- You will see that there is a very large discrepancy between the accuracy
- of the program and the accuracy that a monitor can display the information.
- Unfortunately there is nothing that I can do about this until a monitor
- with a 2880 by 1440 pixel display is manufactured and Acorn produce a
- computer that can handle a 4 Megabyte screen!
-
- As a result of the relatively low resolution of monitors the sighting line
- produced by pressing 'L' can sometimes be displayed in a slightly different
- position to which it is calculated to be in. For an example perspective
- scaling of the balls displays balls that have visible diameters that
- contain alternately odd and even numbers of pixels wide. When a ball is
- displayed an even number of pixels wide it is impossible to draw the
- sighting line exactly through the middle of the ball. This can have the
- effect that for certain shots the line can be slightly misleading as to
- where ball contact will occur. I therefore recommend that you do not rely
- absolutely upon the sighting line for taking shots, but that you should
- only use it as a rough guide, and for getting out of snookers. You will
- find that after a short amount of practice you will be able to judge
- shots far more accurately without the line. After all you don't have a
- sighting line in real life!

- PRACTICE
-
- There is a small misprint in the instructions.
- The maximum number of practice setups that can be saved is 40, not 47 as is
- stated in the instructions.

- TOURNAMENT:
-
- When saving a tournament it should be noted that you cannot save if there
- is a partially completed match.
-
- An additional feature of the ability to save a record of a tournament has
- been added to the programs. If you quit out of a tournament either after
- the final or when all human competitors have been eliminated, you will be
- given the option of saving a tournament record. If you quit a tournament
- with a human match still to be played, it is not possible to force a result
- so no save option will be given.
-
- A total of 40 tournament records can be saved to the data disc. Any one of
- which can be viewed by clicking on the 'EXAMINE RECORDS' box in tournament
- mode.

- ACTION REPLAY:
-
- All ball motions in 'BREAK 147' and 'SUPER POOL' are calculated using a new
- form of algorithm which I refer to as 'reality software'. This algorithm is
- extremely complex and takes full account of and simulates the effects of
- air humidity upon the nap of the baize, balls, cue tip and even the way
- that the cue travels across your bridge hand. In addition to this an allo-
- wance is made for the fact that no cue tip presents a perfect contact
- surface to the cueball. The presence of very tiny amounts of moisture or
- chalk upon the surface of a ball allows the transference of spin between
- two balls when they contact. This spin will effect the trajectory and roll
- of each ball concerned. This is a factor that you will be far too familiar
- with if you have ever played in some of the more 'seedy' basement snooker
- halls.
-
- Taking the above factors into account no two shots even given exactly the
- same start levels of directional angle, power, side and top spin, will
- finish in exactly the same way. This variance is usually very slight and
- may not be noticeable except under certain very critical conditions.
-
- Because of the way that reality software works a true record of each shot
- could take anything up to 300 kilobytes of storage. This would obviously
- limit replays to expanded machines only. To overcome this, a replay is
- actually that, the balls are repositioned to their start points and the
- shot is replayed with exactly the same starting forces as the original.
- This means that under reality software there is a very small chance that
- the viewed shot may sometimes differ by one or two percent from the
- original. Any differences that do occur will have no effect on the game
- as the balls are reset to their correct positions after the replay.
